EDITORIAL
We have reached the end of 2023! The year has made us even more confident and happy with the results of the projects we have been doing with our associates. In partnership with ApexBrasil (Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency), the Brazil Games Sector Project was a success! The year ended with a great announcement: the launch of gamescom latam, which has joined forces with BIG Festival, which will now be part of the event, which will be the largest in Latin America. For next year, the Abragames team is constantly coming up with ideas and many good things are already starting to come to fruition and will be included in the agenda.
Happy Holidays to everyone and see you in 2024, which will undoubtedly be a very exciting year for our sector.
GAMESCOM LATAM
Abragames welcomes and supports the launch of the new gamescom LATAM in Brazil
The event is the result of a partnership between BIG Festival and gamescom.
Abragames, a partner of BIG Festival since its first editions, is an official supporter of gamescom LATAM, an event that will be held by Koelnmesse, organizer of gamescom in Cologne/GER and Singapore/SIN; by game (Germain Games Industry Association), the German industry association; by BIG Festival, the largest games festival in Latin America, and by Omelete Company, a leading company in the pop culture segment in Brazil.
As in other editions of the BIG Festival, Abragames will continue to be part of the curation of B2B content at gamescom LATAM, coordinating panels and lectures, and will be responsible for some of the international guests who will be at the event in 2024.
“Abragames will participate in gamescom LATAM 2024 with the aim of promoting the national gaming industry and generating business opportunities for national studios. In 2023, for example, at the BIG Festival, the association was responsible for more than 40 hours of live content and brought 37 personalities from other countries to participate in the festival”, analyzes Rodrigo Terra, president of Abragames.
“Now, with the new gamescom LATAM, we will further expand our participation and provide memorable moments for players, developers, executives, fans, enthusiasts and other colleagues in the gaming industry”, concludes the president of Abragames.
Gamescom LATAM will take place from June 26 to 30 at São Paulo Expo in São Paulo, and the goal is for the event to become one of the largest business and launch platforms in the gaming sector in the world. Abragames will provide full support to ensure the success of Gamescom LATAM.

MARKET
Playing for the Planet launched the Green Game Jam. Abragames supports the Green Game Jam: Together for Environmental Sustainability.Playing for the Planet is a global initiative that aims to mobilize the gaming industry to make a positive contribution to environmental sustainability. Launched in September 2019 during the UN Climate Summit, the initiative brings together leading companies in the gaming industry to combat climate change and promote sustainable practices. The initiative recognizes the global reach of gaming and seeks to leverage this influence to inspire positive environmental action.
Playing for the Planet recently launched the Green Game Jam, a unique event that challenges game studios to implement sustainable practices into their existing games. Rather than creating games from scratch in a short period of time, we invite developers to incorporate green activations into their current projects. Over the course of four years, the Green Game Jam has already achieved remarkable achievements, including planting over 2.5 million trees and donating $700,000 USD to support wildlife.
We believe that together we can make a difference by uniting the creativity of the game development community to positively impact our planet. We strongly encourage Abragames member studios to join us in this sustainable effort. The starter kit is available on the Playing for the Planet website. The deadline for studio applications is January 15, 2024.

OPPORTUNITY
Hey, let’s talk about Law and games?
Throughout the year, in the Abragames newsletter, CQS/FV Advogados published a series of articles discussing the importance of Law in the gaming industry. In this last space of 2023, we will remember five moments:
1. Why shouldn’t copyright and intellectual property be neglected in game soundtracks?
“The audio elements present in digital games may have different sources of copyright, such as composition, performance or recording. It is important to note that, often, the copyright of real musical compositions is owned, co-owned and/or administered by music publishers. In this sense, the music used in digital games is protected in the same way as in any other context”, explains CQS/FV lawyer Camila Vilela. Read the full article https://bit.ly/3PrTPU8
2. In the context of international negotiations, what are the main challenges during the restructuring of a company?
According to CQS/FV Advogados partner Daniella Galvão, they are found in three areas: Corporate, Labor and Tax. Read the full article https://bit.ly/3l6akKf
3. “The Last of Us” came out of the gaming universe and became a hit on HBO. In an article, CQS/FV lawyer Caio Duarte and office manager Rodrigo Chacon list what we should learn from adaptations like this.

4. Still in the area of Copyright Law, there is the article “Copyright: bad choices can ruin your game – and your name”, by the manager of CQS/FV Advogados Lucas Morado.
In the text, the expert highlights: “Those who act as a marketplace, in their terms of use, present a sentence stating that they are not responsible for any violation of rights resulting from the use of any asset sold there.
“In other words, if you have a problem down the road, it will be up to you to find the person who created it – in the case of a violation, whoever copied third-party property – to hold them responsible for your loss.”

5. With over 20 years of experience in Entertainment Law and after participating in the 2023 editions of events such as Gamescom, Web Summit and BIG Festival, the founding partner of CQS/FV Advogados Fábio de Sá Cesnik analyzes the gaming market this year and discusses the future of the business
